On Saturday, the Denim Group participated in the first annual Accessibility Internet Rally. The Denim Group Dungarees came to win, as did other teams from Rackspace (who provided three teams), USAA, and other companies. There was plenty of free food and free swag, but no free time as the competition was fierce!
The contest was a daylong event to create a website from scratch for a non-profit organization that is completely accessible to all members of society. The website had to follow guidelines and recommendations from Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Section 508, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and so on. Overall it was a lot of fun and good practice in client-side coding. Oftentimes, frameworks provided by ASP.NET, Struts, or the like provide help in producing client-side code using server-side constructs, so this was a good session to remember the power that compliant HTML/XHTML and CSS provide.
The awards ceremony is Tuesday November 13, so we’ll see if we have a title to defend next year.
